Welcome to our wāhine in business series - where we interview some incredible women we have been privileged to work with. Read on to hear all about Holly Ensor, owner of The Flower Bar, and her journey as a business owner.
What is your business and how did you get into it at the start?
The Flower Bar, A Florist Shop in Howick.
I was offered a small store within a supermarket.
What inspired you to start your own business?
My kids getting older and needing transition from being a full time Mum.
What are some of the obstacles that you have faced and how have you overcome these?
COVID was a big one. And Identity and Branding.
Covid was a matter of not spending where you couldn’t make your money back immediately. And also not taken on anything unknown i.e. Valentine’s Day. Gambles weren't an option.
Identity and showing the public who you are and going with it consistently was really difficult but The Renew Room through media and website helped me find that identity and brand that my customers and I love.
What advice can you give to other women looking to branch out on their own?
Do your numbers and practice run it without signing huge leases etc. Build Gradually!
You yourself are an inspiration to many women, who has inspired you?
Joanna Gaines, a Designer from America with a Natural Approach to everything.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
IDEAS! My mind is full of them all the time.
And I look forward every morning to getting to the shop and to create something new!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully in a more stable economy so that I can build into a business that gives back to the community on a much bigger scale.
Any other comments about you or your story that will be beneficial to mention?
Before you pay any bills, pay your taxes first!
Give yourself a weekly wage and don't take more than that.
